A nonprofit news project covering race, social justice and related issues took another step toward becoming a reality. Yawu Miller, formerly the senior editor of The Bay State Banner, announced on Twitter that the nascent organization he’s launching with Claudio Martinez will be called the Greater Boston News Bureau.

Many of this country’s biggest problems are devilishly hard to solve. The decline of local news may be different. “It took a generation for the American news industry to unravel, and it will take a generation to fully rebuild it,” Sarabeth Berman, C.E.O. of the American Journalism Project, which funds nonprofit newsrooms, said in a recent speech.“
This summer, the American Journalism Project launched our new Product & AI Studio, a new program to explore the smart application of emerging technologies in local journalism. Today, we’re excited to share an update on the progress the Studio has made so far.
Last year, Documented conducted audience research to understand better the news needs of Caribbean immigrants living in New York. The findings paved the way for Documented’s decision to create a communication channel with Caribbean immigrants via Nextdoor.
