Christa Scharfenberg

Senior Vice President, Portfolio Success

Christa leads American Journalism Project’s efforts to provide  grantees with sustained coaching, capacity-building support, and strategic guidance, and she oversees the organization’s learning and impact work.

Christa was previously CEO of Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting, where she spent 18 years leading the organization’s growth from a small nonprofit to a multi-platform newsroom that reaches millions. Christa was a key leader of CIR’s local journalism initiative, California Watch, and was executive and senior producer of numerous documentaries, including the Academy Award-nominated film “Heroin(e).” Previously she held positions at the Film Arts Foundation and Civic Ventures in San Francisco and at City Year in Boston.

Christa lives in Oakland, California, with her children and is a member of the Poynter Institute National Advisory Board, sits on the Ethics Council Member at CORRECTIV, and is an advisor to the Legal Clinic Fund.

Christa serves as a Success Partner to Chalkbeat, ICT, and The Marshall Project.

Success Partners provide close support to grantees over the course of their grant and serve as their advisor and main liaison to the American Journalism Project.
