Civic News Company
Focus
Creating a network of topical newsrooms covering local education, public health and elections.
Civic News Company is the parent organization of nonprofit newsrooms Chalkbeat, Votebeat and Healthbeat.
Chalkbeat, established in 2013, is a leading source of local education news. With bureaus in eight states, it covers the effort to improve schools for all children, especially those who have historically lacked access to a quality education.
In 2020, the Chalkbeat team launched Votebeat as a pop-up newsroom to cover local elections in priority states. Votebeat launched as a permanent newsroom in 2022 and currently operates in five states: Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin.
Healthbeat is Civic News Company’s newest addition. Launched in 2024, the newsroom covers public health in America, starting in New York City and Atlanta and adding a third location in 2025.
With support from the American Journalism Project, Civic News Company hired the core business and revenue staff to support this ambitious growth plan.
