Business Strategy & Expansion Lead

Matt supports our grantee portfolio on their efforts to expand to meet the local news and information needs of more communities. He also works with startup organizations on business strategy as they build sustainable approaches to growth in their early years. 

Matt previously conducted due diligence and led growth planning experiences for grantseekers. He also managed research and helped address local information gaps through our Local Philanthropy Partnerships program. Before joining our team, Matt led Atlantic Media’s strategy research team, working on a variety of editorial, business, and operational challenges for The Atlantic, Government Executive, Quartz and National Journal.

Matt received his B.A. in urban studies from the University of Pennsylvania, during which time he oversaw the independent student newspaper, The Daily Pennsylvanian. Matt lives in San Francisco.

Matt serves as a success partner to Cityside, inewsource, Montana Free Press, Underscore Native News and WyoFile.

Success Partners provide close support to our portfolio organizations over the course of their grant and serve as their advisor and main liaison to the American Journalism Project.
