Matt supports grantees across our portfolio with growth planning and research to understand how they can sustainably meet their communities’ needs. He also works on our grantmaking program, conducting due diligence and leading growth planning experiences for grantseekers.

He previously managed research and helped address local information gaps through our Local Philanthropy Partnerships program. Before joining our team, Matt led Atlantic Media’s strategy research team, working on a variety of editorial, business, and operational challenges for The Atlantic, Government Executive, Quartz, and National Journal. He also edited and wrote The Idea, a newsletter on the journalism business.

Matt received his B.A. in Urban Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, during which time he oversaw the independent student newspaper, The Daily Pennsylvanian. Matt lives in San Francisco.

Matt serves as a success partner to Cityside and Montana Free Press.

Success Partners provide close support to grantees over the course of their grant and serve as their advisor and main liaison to the American Journalism Project.
