Chalkbeat is a leading source for local education news, with bureaus in eight states covering the effort to improve schools for all children, especially those who have historically lacked access to a quality education.

This year, Chalkbeat launched a five-year campaign to more than double the number of cities in which it operates and to launch multiple new verticals, starting with voting and elections — building on its Votebeat project to cover the 2020 elections — and public health — in partnership with Kaiser Health News. Chalkbeat plans to create a new parent organization to manage the growth and expansion.

With support from the American Journalism Project, Chalkbeat will hire the core business and revenue staff to support this ambitious growth plan and triple the organization’s budget by 2024.
